While I do agree that this whole "having the baby so brave" thing needs to go, I always figured that the writers of all these shows preferred the women to keep the babies, because that's a story arc for the entire season and baby-related hijinks for the next. Abortion is one episode, maybe two tops but with a preggo character you have nausea episode, i-feel-fat-and-ugly episode, scared-of-being-single-mother episode and of course, the season finale when everybody gets to yell "PUSH" at her.

What I DO find annoying is the sheer number of natural births on television. None of them opt (or need) to have an epidural or a C-sec or need to get stitched up after, because that's for weak women, presumably. The latest offender was Bones (season finale aired yesterday) where Angela "bravely" decides to have her baby without any drugs and calmly discusses the future with her husband while pushing. Easy-peasy. And then she tells another character how labour was so beautiful and perfect or some nonsense like that. My mom told me that giving birth was so goddamn painful that she didn't want to so much as look at my brother after he was born.

I’m a huge GA fan – your review is super! It’s interesting, especially when you compare what happened in this week's Grey’s, to other popular shows depicting empowered women making “real” choices, notably Sex and the City. SATC had an episode on a similar theme in season 4 - where Miranda eventually did not terminate her pregnancy, and Carrie recounted her own story of having an abortion when she was 20-something. SATC’s treatment of abortion was disappointing. It neatly fit into every prime-time show stereotype you describe in your review. And the only thing Carrie seemed to worry (actually obsess) about 15 years later, was how her boyfriend at the time - Aidan - would react to the fact. Grey’s gets a lot of credit this week for acknowledging, both, the fact that women can make real choices about having children and that this choice is always a very difficult one.
