I won't deny that the film was absolutely stunning, especially the evolution bit and it definitely has me thinking about it. Interposing the demise of a loved one with the birth of the universe reminded me strongly of what Kahlil Gibran haunting passage,
"Yet the timeless in you is aware of life's timelessness,
And knows that yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream.
And that that which sings and contemplates in you is still dwelling
within the bounds of that first moment which scattered the stars into space."

Having said that, the movie felt self-absorbed and bordered on pretentious. And a lot of bits looked like a cellphone ad (especially with the breathy voice-overs) . I thought Malick struggled to maintain that balance of subtlety. Some scenes were either so subtle that they veered into WTF territory, or were chock-full of Important and Obvious Biblical Metaphors.
